A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE VOCAL TALENT OF RANDY CRAWFORD, AND TO WELCOME HER TO THE PALMETTO STATE FOR HER PERFORMANCE ON FEBRUARY 22, 2008, AT THE FIFTH ANNUAL LEGENDS OF JAZZ CONCERT SERIES FOR THE AUNTIE KAREN FOUNDATION.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly are pleased to learn that Randy Crawford, loved the world over for her incredible voice and unique songs, will perform in the capital city of our fine State to benefit a charitable organization, the Auntie Karen Foundation; and

Whereas, born in neighboring Macon, Georgia, and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, Randy Crawford started singing in the choir loft of her neighboring church; and

Whereas, as a teenager, she had already established a reputation on the midwestern club circuit, and by the age of twenty-one, she had performed and recorded with numerous vocal legends and regularly toured with George Benson; and

Whereas, she first signed a recording contract in 1976 with Warner Brothers Records and has since then enjoyed international fame and success; and

Whereas, Randy Crawford and jazz pianist Joe Sample met thirty years ago when Joe played on her debut album Everything Must Change, and through the years, he has written numerous signature songs for her voice, such as Street Life, which launched her on a phenomenal vocal career; and

Whereas, now after thirty years of working together, they have collaborated to record a duet album, a wonderful musical heritage of soul, jazz, gospel, pop, and a bit of the blues, with Joe's piano playing and arrangements to envelop Randy's voice and capture the essence of each song; and

Whereas, the Auntie Karen Foundation based in South Carolina is bringing these two musicians to Columbia in keeping with its vision and mission to educate, enlighten, and empower through the arts; the foundation has also benefited a global market with an emphasis on reproducible community outreach programs; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly applaud the work of the Auntie Karen Foundation in bringing the talent of vocalist Randy Crawford and jazz legend Joe Sample to Columbia to perform. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize and honor the vocal talent of Randy Crawford, and welcome her to the Palmetto State for her performance on February 22, 2008, at the fifth annual Legends Of Jazz Concert Series for the Auntie Karen Foundation.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Randy Crawford.
