A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE HEROES AND LEGENDS OF LEXINGTON COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT ONE WHO HAVE SERVED THEIR COUNTRY IN THE ARMED FORCES, INCLUDING THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN DEFENSE OF THE UNITED STATES, ON THE OCCASION OF THE DEDICATION OF THE FLOYD D. SPENCE JUNIOR AIR FORCE ROTC WING AT LEXINGTON HIGH SCHOOL ON FEBRUARY 5, 2007.

Whereas, many young men and women who graduated from the high schools of Lexington County School District One have served, and continue to serve, their country in the armed forces of the United States, the Reserves, and the National Guard; and

Whereas, 213 men of this district (60 in World War I, 102 in World War II, 15 in the Korean War, 33 in the Vietnam War, and 3 in the Gulf Wars) made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of their country; and

Whereas, on February 5, 2007, Lexington County School District One will present a program, Heroes and Legends, to recognize the military service of its graduates, especially those who gave their lives in defense of the United States; and

Whereas, Lexington County School District One will dedicate the new wing at Lexington High School in honor and memory of the late Congressman Floyd D. Spence in recognition of his commitment and dedication to military and veterans' issues; and

Whereas, the new wing at Lexington High School will be named the Floyd D. Spence Junior Air Force ROTC Wing; and

Whereas, the citizens of Lexington County School District One are gathering for the Heroes and Legends program at Lexington High School to honor those veterans, living and dead, of Lexington County who served at great personal sacrifice to themselves and their families; and

Whereas, the program will include a presentation by members of the Navajo Code Talkers, an elite group of Native American Marines who used their Navajo language as a code the enemy was never able to break, thus playing a pivotal role in the victory in the Pacific; and

Whereas, it is fitting that a grateful people and its government should express their sincere and heartfelt appreciation to the men and women of our armed services for their selfless and dedicated sacrifice and service. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and honor the heroes and legends of Lexington County School District One who have served their country in the armed forces, including those who gave their lives in defense of the United States, on the occasion of the dedication of the Floyd D. Spence Junior Air Force ROTC Wing at Lexington High School on February 5, 2007.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Lexington County School District One.
