VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND THE SOUTH CAROLINA YOUTH CORPS AND ITS DIRECTOR FOR THEIR INNOVATIVE AND OUTSTANDING LEADERSHIP TRAINING PROGRAM FOR NINTH AND TENTH GRADE STUDENTS IN RICHLAND AND LEXINGTON COUNTIES AND TO WISH THE PROGRAM MUCH CONTINUED SUCCESS.
Whereas, South Carolina Youth Corps is a leadership training program that began in 2005 for ninth and tenth grade male and female students in Richland and Lexington Counties; and
Whereas, South Carolina Youth Corps is based on the conviction that young people must be educated and equipped for decision-making positions in the Midlands' public, private, and independent sectors, building a unified body of young people prepared for future involvement in community leadership; and
Whereas, the mission of Youth Corps is to provide a course of practical, hands-on, on-site study and experience for these students to afford them opportunities and exposure to relevant professional competencies as an important aspect of community service; and
Whereas, students, numbering thirty-five to forty, begin the program leadership weekend followed by approximately twelve hours a month participating in various experience modules each month of the school year; and
Whereas, while gaining exposure and opportunity, students explore art and culture, develop and implement a business plan, work with nonprofit organizations on community service projects, observe the criminal court process and help victims of crime, learn about the legislative process and all branches of government, interact with professionals in media and journalism, learn about basic finance, investments, and money management, and explore career opportunities to begin developing a career plan; and
Whereas, South Carolina Youth Corps provides students of Richland and Lexington Counties the experience and opportunity to develop valuable skills, preparing them for important leadership roles in the future of South Carolina. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, recognize and commend the South Carolina Youth Corps and its director for their innovative and outstanding leadership training program for ninth and tenth grade students in Richland and Lexington Counties and wish the program much continued success.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the Director of the South Carolina Youth Corps.
