A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND THE NEWBERRY HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL TEAM FOR ITS OUTSTANDING SEASON AND FOR CAPTURING THE 2006 CLASS AA UPPER STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE.

Whereas, the Newberry High School football team captured the 2006 Class AA Upper State Championship title with a convincing 27-0 victory over Columbia High School on November 24, 2006, at Newberry's Mike Ware Field; and

Whereas, on December 2, 2006, the Bulldogs advanced to the football championship game at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, where thousands of Newberry residents proudly supported their Bulldogs against Cheraw High School; and

Whereas, in a season of distinction, the 2006 Newberry High School football team completed a highly impressive campaign, finishing the season with a 12-3 record, reeling off eleven straight victories, and holding eleven of its fifteen opponents to seven points or less; and

Whereas, the Bulldogs secured the 2006 Region 3 Class AA Football Championship title with a win over Ninety Six High School, earning the Newberry High School football program its fourth regional title in six years; and

Whereas, Head Coach Sam Baird served as a 2006 Shrine Bowl backfield coach, and running back Sanchez Gartman competed in the 2006 Shrine Bowl as a player, this being the first time in over twenty-five years that the Newberry High School football program has been the concurrent source of both a coach and a player participating in the Shrine Bowl; and

Whereas, the Bulldogs have brought great pride and recognition to their school and community, and the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are pleased to honor such an exceptional group of young men and their coaches. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and commend the Newberry High School football team for its outstanding season and for capturing the 2006 Class AA Upper State Championship title.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the principal of Newberry High School, Barry Rosenberg, and Head Coach Sam Baird.
