A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO HONOR PROFESSOR CHARLES DAVID BROOKS III, OF RICHLAND COUNTY, FOR HIS OUTSTANDING ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN THE FIELDS OF EDUCATION AND THEATRE AND FOR HIS DEDICATED SERVICE TO THE BUTLER HERITAGE FOUNDATION AND TO THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA.

Whereas, the former Butler High School served the black community of Hartsville, South Carolina, at the same location from 1921 until 1982, being initially known as the Darlington County Training School but renamed in 1936 after the Rev. Henry H. Butler; and

Whereas, the former Butler High School has produced many administrators, doctors, lawyers, educators, and other productive citizens of society, Professor Charles David Brooks III being one such distinguished alumnus; and

Whereas, born in Harlem, New York, to parents from Barnwell, South Carolina, Charles David Brooks III comes from a long line of South Carolina educators, as in the case of his great-uncle, Dr. Henry H. Butler, a graduate of Benedict College, first principal of Butler High School in Hartsville, fifth president of Morris College, and the distinguished leader after whom Butler High School was named; and

Whereas, as a child Professor Brooks was a "hoofer" on the street corners of New York City during World War II and there began his performing career as a dancer and actor, a path that led him through the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs; and

Whereas, he received his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Fine Arts degrees from the University of California in Los Angeles, as well as a Master of Education degree from Columbia University in New York City; and

Whereas, for ten years he directed and produced a variety show, The Charles Brooks Show, for Manhattan Cable Television, and after years of performing, teaching, and public service, Professor Brooks arrived at Benedict College in the fall of 2000 to begin service as Assistant Professor of Theatre in the Fine Arts Department; and

Whereas, during his seven-year tenure at Benedict College, Charles David Brooks has starred in The River Niger and directed The Dreamy Kid; Our Lives, Our Voices, Our Music; Five on the Black Hand Side; Affairs of Our Ancestors; Day of Absence; HELP!; Flying West; and Dreamgirls; and

Whereas, while he has served his college, he has not forgotten his family heritage in Hartsville, for he has diligently aided the Butler Heritage Foundation in that city in raising funds for the restoration and renovation of the former Butler High School, now finding new life as a community center; and

Whereas, the General Assembly is pleased to have this opportunity to honor Professor Charles David Brooks III, a man committed not only to excellence in his teaching, writing, directing, and personal theatrical performance but also to service, as his willingness to volunteer his time to the Hartsville community and to the Butler Heritage Foundation so abundantly shows. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, honor Professor Charles David Brooks III, of Richland County, for his outstanding accomplishments in the fields of education and theatre and for his dedicated service to the Butler Heritage Foundation and to the State of South Carolina.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Professor Charles David Brooks III.
