A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO HONOR AND COMMEND AUSTIN AND SALLY BROWN, OF CAMDEN, FOR THEIR DECADES OF SELFLESS EFFORT AND ONGOING COMMITMENT TO THE CITY OF CAMDEN AND KERSHAW COUNTY, RESULTING IN IMMEASURABLE CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE BETTERMENT OF LIFE FOR ALL WHO LIVE THERE, AND TO WISH THEM MUCH HAPPINESS AND SUCCESS IN ALL THEIR FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, it is with great pleasure that the General Assembly recognizes individuals who are dedicated to giving of themselves to improve the quality of life for the citizens of South Carolina; and

Whereas, Austin and Sally Brown, beloved Camdenites who have lived more than half a century in Camden, are extraordinary examples of such dedicated individuals, worthy of tribute for their immeasurable contributions and selfless giving of their time and talents to both Camden and Kershaw County; and

Whereas, the Browns have been tireless supporters and devoted workers of the Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County. As Chairman of the Center's Board, Mr. Brown demonstrated compelling leadership, wisdom, and style and was instrumental in developing a substantial donor network. Together Mr. and Mrs. Brown assumed the role of host and hostess for the center, and today the center prospers in many respects due to their vision and example; and

Whereas, Sally, the quintessential lady, with abundant charm and grace, has displayed her acting talent at the Fine Arts Center and in community theatre, with stellar performances in roles as diverse as Mrs. Higgins in My Fair Lady and Maxine, a raucous character in The Dayporch, which went on to tour the Southeast. Austin, a former Boston Marathoner, has delighted audiences with his shapely legs in male revue fundraisers for the Center; and

Whereas, while serving on the United Way of Kershaw County Board of Directors, Austin Brown was chairman of several United Way Leadership Giving drives, and his personal philanthropy, paired with his true caring spirit and persuasive fund-raising prowess, helped to significantly increase Leadership Giving; and

Whereas, during Sally Brown's years of active service on the Kershaw County Board of Disabilities and Special Needs, she drew many influential donors into the work of the Board, her insight and nurturing heart guiding her service during a period of the board's greatest expansion of programs and services; and

Whereas, Mr. Brown, an avid supporter of steeplechase, has had a long and distinguished career in the sport as a rider, trainer, owner, and race steward and as a dedicated member of many local and national steeplechase organizations, including being elected to the prestigious Board of the National Steeplechase Foundation in 2004; and

Whereas, bringing his expertise and passion for steeplechase to Camden, Mr. Brown spearheaded the effort to build the National Steeplechase Museum in Camden and has dedicated great effort to making the Carolina Cup Races and Colonial Cup Races successful and nationally competitive, with the end result of ever-increasing gifts to the Kershaw County Medical Center; and

Whereas, Mrs. Brown, who shares her husband's love of horses and who herself has been a bold and talented rider, has served as the Master of Fox Hounds for the Camden Hunt, and together the Browns have parleyed their passion into promoting the equestrian community in Camden; and

Whereas, it is proper and fitting for the members of the General Assembly to recognize and honor such exceptional South Carolinians as Sally and Austin Brown whose love and devotion to one another and whose partnership and support of each other's worthy endeavors have contributed in myriad ways to life in South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, honor and commend Austin and Sally Brown, of Camden, for their decades of selfless effort and ongoing commitment to the City of Camden and Kershaw County to the betterment of life for all who live there, and wish them much happiness and success in all their future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Austin and Sally Brown.
