A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO HONOR AND RECOGNIZE ALONZO SPRY, OF RICHLAND COUNTY, DRIVER OF THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA GOLF TEAM, FOR HIS QUICK THINKING AND CALM DEMEANOR DURING A POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS TIRE BLOWOUT, AND TO WISH HIM ALL THE BEST IN HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, on Tuesday, February 20, 2007, Mr. Alonzo Spry, driver of the University of South Carolina Golf Team, avoided danger and possible injury to the team as he expertly maneuvered the forty-foot tour bus off the highway after a tire exploded; and

Whereas, the team was returning from a tournament held in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, and was on I-95 nearing the I-26 interchange when Alonzo Spry heard what he described as a cannon firing; and

Whereas, mindful of the safety of the team and of other drivers, he kept control of the bus and veered off to the right, traveling down an embankment before coming to rest against a large tree; and

Whereas, Alonzo began working for Team A1, the team's driving company, three months ago, after driving for the Capital Bus Lines from 1994 until 2001; and

Whereas, the fateful February 20, 2007 trip was the first time he had ever driven the team to a tournament; and

Whereas, lauding him as a true hero, the University of South Carolina Golf Team awarded him with a golf bag and cap, and Head Golf Coach Bill McDonald jokes that Mr. Spry will enjoy free golf lessons for life; and

Whereas, it is with great pride that the General Assembly pauses to honor Alonzo Spry for his exceptional courage and quick thinking in assuring the safe return of the University of South Carolina Golf Team. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, honor and recognize Alonzo Spry, of Richland County, driver of the University of South Carolina Golf Team, for his quick thinking and calm demeanor during a potentially dangerous tire blowout, and wish him all the best in his future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Spry.
