A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR REVEREND LEVI C. CHAVOUS, SR., OF AIKEN COUNTY, FOR HIS EXCEPTIONAL FORTY YEARS OF SERVICE AND COMMITMENT TO THE PEOPLE OF RIDGEWOOD MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH, AND TO WISH HIM ALL THE BEST IN THE COMING YEARS.

Whereas, a native South Carolinian, Reverend Levi C. Chavous, Sr., was born and raised in Aiken County, where he attended public schools; and

Whereas, Reverend Chavous graduated from Florida Normal College and from Union Seminary; and

Whereas, active in the Civil Rights Movement, Reverend Chavous marched with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and was awarded an honorary Doctorate from Union Seminary for his outstanding dedication to achieving equality for all; and

Whereas, a devoted family man, Reverend Chavous shares a loving marriage with Lucille Sapp Chavous, and adores his two children, Levi Chavous, Jr., and Zenobia Chavous Ferraro, and one granddaughter, Stephanie Allona Chavous; and

Whereas, earning respect and admiration during service in the United States military, Reverend Chavous was offered a promotion to become an officer, but declined the honor to instead devote himself to God's will in becoming a minister; and

Whereas, in December 1967, Reverend Chavous became the third pastor of Ridgewood Missionary Baptist Church, where he has faithfully served the church community for the past forty years; and

Whereas, his steady leadership has inspired the church community to grow and change over an incredible four decades, and examples of his work include the Birthday Club, the Pulpit Aid Ministry, The Brotherhood, the L.C. Chavous Ushers, the Cherubs Choir, and the Youth Ministry, among many others; and

Whereas, actively involved in numerous community organizations and affiliations, Reverend Chavous serves on the Board of Trustees of both Florida Normal College and Morris College. A past President of the Fellowship Union, he also has served as Chairperson of the Evangelism Department for the E.M. Convention and was the founder of the Ridgewood Foundation; and

Whereas, though Reverend Chavous will shortly step down from the pulpit after forty years of steadfast service, his immeasurable contributions to his church community and to the State of South Carolina will not soon be forgotten. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and honor Reverend Levi C. Chavous, Sr., of Aiken County, for his exceptional forty years of service and commitment to the people of Ridgewood Missionary Baptist Church, and wish him all the best in the coming years.
