A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA GENERAL ASSEMBLY UPON THE PASSING OF DR. JENNINGS "JENKS" K. OWENS OF MARLBORO COUNTY, AND TO CONVEY DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly were deeply saddened by news of the death of Dr. Jennings "Jenks" K. Owens on June 12, 2007; and

Whereas, born on September 6, 1916 in Bennettsville, Dr. Owens was the son of the late Jennings Kerr Owens, a local attorney and state representative, and the late Isla Easterling Owens; and

Whereas, a 1933 graduate of Bennettsville High School, Dr. Owens earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Wofford College in 1937 and a Medical Degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1940. He continued his professional development with an internship at Columbia Hospital and a surgical internship at Roper Hospital; and

Whereas, Dr. Owens practiced medicine in Bennettsville for 42 years, serving with distinction in numerous professional capacities, including membership on the McLeod Regional Hospital Board of Directors, state chapter president of the American College of Surgeons, and Chief of Staff of Marlboro General Hospital; and

Whereas, the Honorable Jennings D. Owens also maintained a commitment to public service as Mayor of Bennettsville, County Supervisor, member of the Marlboro County School District Board of Education, chairman of the Bennettsville Area School Board; and

Whereas, in recognition of his contributions to South Carolina, Governor Carroll A. Campbell, Jr., awarded Dr. Owens the Order of the Palmetto in 1994; and

Whereas, a devoted Christian, Dr. Owens was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church in Bennettsville, serving as chairman of the church board for four years, and offering his medical services as a medical missionary in Haiti, Anguilla, Bolivia, Nicaragua, and Guyana; and

Whereas, patriarch to a loving family, Dr. Owens was a devoted husband to the late Grace Salley Buie of Denmark and is survived by sons Jennings "Jay" Kerr Owens III and his wife, Debbie; William Doddridge "Dodd" Owens and his wife, Beth; Fitzhugh "Hugh" S. Owens and his wife, Mary; and Philip Malcolm Owens and his wife, Beth; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild; and

Whereas, though it is with heavy hearts that the members of the General Assembly mourn the loss of this great South Carolina gentleman, physician, public servant, and family man, we celebrate his life full of service, faith, and love. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the passing of Dr. Jennings "Jenks" K. Owens of Marlboro County, and convey deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to each of Dr. Owens' sons.
