A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO HONOR MRS. BARBARA VIRGINIA GREGG, OF RICHLAND COUNTY, ON THE OCCASION OF MOTHER'S DAY, AND TO WISH HER A JOYOUS CELEBRATION AND MANY MORE YEARS OF HEALTH AND HAPPINESS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly note with pleasure that Mother's Day will be celebrated on Sunday, May 11, 2008; and

Whereas, it is fitting that all the citizens of South Carolina should pause to remember their mothers and express gratitude for the care and love these dear ones continually give their children, and, on the occasion of Mother's Day 2008, the General Assembly wishes to honor Mrs. Barbara Virginia Gregg as one of this great State's outstanding mothers, one worthy of praise and emulation by all women who would be a blessing to their children; and

Whereas, one of a fine family of sixteen children, Barbara Virginia Gregg, daughter of the late James C. and Pearl Brown Mumford, was born on May 14, 1934, in Society Hill; and

Whereas, the young Barbara completed her early education at Butler High School in Hartsville, and some years later after twenty years of service, she retired from the position of emergency-room secretary with Baptist Medical Center in Columbia. That same year, Baptist Medical Center named this compassionate lady 1996 Secretary of the Year; and

Whereas, for fifty-three years, she has been the devoted wife of Eugene Gregg, Sr., the Lord blessing their union with four children, Yvette, Peggy, Eugene, Jr., and Janice, as well as three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and

Whereas, serving until recently on the church deaconess board, Mrs. Gregg assisted with the various duties of this position and served as secretary for many years. She has been a faithful, longtime choir member and has invested untold hours of "sweat equity" in building the New Ebenezer missionary and kitchen ministries and in taking care of various people in need. A firm believer in the importance of Sunday School and Bible study, she energetically and successfully promotes these ministries. Because of her encouragement, many have followed in her footsteps in assuming leadership roles and assisting others in need; and

Whereas, Mrs. Gregg, always a loving wife and mother, has not only brought up her own children in the fear and nurture of the Lord but also has extended her caring to other "adopted" children who have chosen her as their "honorary" mom; and

Whereas, those who know and love her testify that Barbara Gregg is a mother deserving of the commendation found in Proverbs 31:28 (KJV): "Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her." Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, honor Mrs. Barbara Virginia Gregg, of Richland County, on the occasion of Mother's Day, and wish her a joyous celebration and many more years of health and happiness.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Barbara Virginia Gregg.
