A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE MRS. FLORENCE HIRSHMAN LEVY, OF RICHLAND COUNTY, ON THE OCCASION OF HER ONE HUNDREDTH BIRTHDAY, AND TO WISH HER A JOYOUS BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION AND MANY MORE YEARS OF HEALTH AND HAPPINESS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are delighted to learn that Mrs. Florence Hirshman Levy will celebrate her one hundredth birthday on March 2, 2007; and

Whereas, Florence Hirshman Levy was born on March 2, 1907, just after the dawn of the twentieth century, and as that century and the beginnings of the twenty-first century have brought incredible changes and developments to this nation, Mrs. Levy has been there to witness all of them; and

Whereas, a daughter of Isadore and Ida Hirshman, she married Moe Levy, founder of the Moe Levy's store in downtown Columbia, in 1925; and

Whereas, to this union three children were born, Iris Levy Balser, Gloria Levy Rittenberg, and Arlene Levy Pearlsteine, all of Columbia; and

Whereas, a prominent citizen, Mrs. Levy is well known among the people of her community for her kind spirit and grace; and

Whereas, not one to forget her civic duty, she has opened her heart and home to servicemen and women, as well as to patients at the South Carolina State Hospital, and has promoted the preservation of this great State's natural resources as a reflection of her love of lakeside living and fishing at Lake Murray; and

Whereas, in recognition of her contributions to the betterment of her community, she was awarded the Order of the Silver Crescent, the State's highest award for volunteer and community service, by Governor Mark Sanford; and

Whereas, Mrs. Levy's work and leadership attendant to the Jewish Center Bazaar and her faith's other causes have been central among her life's commitments; and

Whereas, still vitally interested in life, Florence Hirshman Levy goes into Moe Levy's every day, as she has for fifty years, to enjoy talking to customers and wait on them, thereby continuing to set an example of dedicated, zestful productivity for all who know her; and

Whereas, the Senate is proud to honor this truly lovely lady at the celebration of her centennial birthday and joins with her family and friends in congratulating her on reaching this extraordinary milestone. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, congratulate Mrs. Florence Hirshman Levy, of Richland County, on the occasion of her one hundredth birthday, and wish her a joyous birthday celebration and many more years of health and happiness.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Florence Hirshman Levy.
