A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND THE WEST FLORENCE HIGH SCHOOL VARSITY BOYS TENNIS TEAM, OF FLORENCE COUNTY, AND TO CONGRATULATE THE PLAYERS AND THEIR COACHES FOR A SUCCESSFUL SEASON AND FOR CAPTURING THE 2008 CLASS AAAA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE, MARKING THEIR SECOND STRAIGHT STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives were pleased to learn that the West Florence High School tennis team won the Class AAAA State Championship title; and

Whereas, in a 15 and 1 season, the West Florence Knights won every match in their region during the regular season and were undefeated in the five matches during the playoffs and claimed the state title against the Lexington Rams on May 10, 2008; and

Whereas, this is the second time in the history of the West Florence High School that the tennis team has taken back-to-back trophies for the state title, first in 1985 and 1986 and then in 2007 and 2008; and

Whereas, in a grueling four-hour match, the Knights were tied 3-3 after the number two doubles match, and the title came down to the number one doubles match; and

Whereas, players Pruitt Williams, a senior and the team captain, and Bobby Browning, a junior, were both named to the All-State Tennis Team, and at number one doubles, they had to play a third set tiebreaker in order to secure the victory for the Knights; and

Whereas, in a sport that requires strength, speed, agility, technique, and endurance, Coach Charlie Nelson and Assistant Coach Jamie Magee used their own athletic ability and experience to forge a championship team and teach the players lessons that have prepared them well; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives commend the West Florence High School Knights for garnering their fourth state championship victory and wait to hear of future successes from this talented team. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and commend the West Florence High School varsity boys tennis team, of Florence County, and congratulate the players and their coaches for a successful season and for capturing the 2008 Class AAAA State Championship title marking their second straight state championship.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Principal Pam Quick and Coach Charlie Nelson.
