A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE THE TOWN OF SPRINGFIELD ON THE REDEDICATION OF THE FORMER SPRINGFIELD HIGH SCHOOL BUILDING ON SATURDAY, MAY 17, 2008.

Whereas, on May 17, 2008, the Town of Springfield will celebrate the rededication of the former Springfield High School building, an event that evidences the collaborative efforts, commitment, and dedication of many individuals and organizations, both local and statewide; and

Whereas, the historic two-story brick building, designed by prominent South Carolina architect James B. Urquhart and completed in 1929, housed fifteen thousand square feet of unused and unusable space when Consolidated School District Number Four deeded it to the Town of Springfield in 2000; and

Whereas, at that time, the town government voted to establish a School Restoration and Use Board to finance and manage the restoration project, as well as to plan and implement the building's use by the town, community, county, region, and State; and

Whereas, seeing the project's worth, donors gave generously to support the work, among them the South Carolina Department of Commerce, South Carolina Department of Transportation, South Carolina Department of Archives and History, and South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism. Auditing of grant monies by the Horne Foundation, Francis White Endowment, and Dr. Roger Stevenson Endowment also furthered the project, and additional government assistance from Orangeburg County, including the Tourism Committee, and various grants was most helpful. Individual and corporate donors, local fundraisers, donations of in-kind labor, and sponsorships of rooms and other elements of the building completed the project's donor base; and

Whereas, now returned to beauty and usefulness from near "demolition by neglect," the restored facility will, among other purposes, serve the citizens of Springfield and beyond as a welcome center, county library, artisans center, museum, and auditorium; and

Whereas, moreover, the former Springfield High School building has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated as a site on the South Carolina National Heritage Corridor; and

Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is pleased to recognize the Town of Springfield's commitment to preserving its heritage while providing needed services to its residents, and the members applaud the dedication and efforts of all who worked so diligently to bring this project to fruition. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate the Town of Springfield upon the rededication of the former Springfield High School building on Saturday, May 17, 2008.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Town of Springfield.
