A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND CONGRATULATE CHRIS CAMPBELL, OF LEXINGTON COUNTY, ON BEING SELECTED TO RECEIVE THE 2008 BERNARD CARROLL BALLENTINE SCHOLARSHIP, AND TO WISH HIM SUCCESS AS HE EMBARKS ON HIS COLLEGE CAREER AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA.

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina pause to honor Chris Campbell of Irmo, the son of Antionette Kelly-Campbell and Maurice Campbell, who has been awarded the 2008 Bernard Carroll Ballentine Scholarship; and

Whereas, an aspiring attorney, Chris Campbell has been a member and officer of the Bands of Irmo, the track team, the speech and debate team, student government, the Beta Club, the National Society of High School Scholars, and the Black Student Union, and he intends to pursue a bachelor's degree from the University of South Carolina in international business; and

Whereas, with a desire to serve others, he has volunteered with Sistercare, Harvest Hope Food Bank, and Homeworks, has given over eighty hours to mentor younger band members, and developed and implemented a plan to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina that involved his raising several thousand dollars. He also has been involved as a member of the Youth Corps of America and Palmetto Boys State; and

Whereas, Representative Nathan Ballentine established the Bernard Carroll Ballentine Scholarship in 2006 in honor of his paternal grandfather who passed away in 1976 and in furtherance of his commitment to return his legislative salary to the community. Bernard Carroll Ballentine graduated from Irmo High School, served with honor in the United States Army during World War II, and was a former fire chief in Columbia; and

Whereas, the Bernard Carroll Ballentine Scholarship is awarded annually to one high school senior who plans to attend the University of South Carolina; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are pleased to have the opportunity to recognize such a noteworthy student and fine young man as Chris Campbell, an outstanding son of Lexington County and this State who has brought pride to his family, school, and community. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and congratulate Chris Campbell, of Lexington County, on being selected to receive the 2008 Bernard Carroll Ballentine Scholarship, and wish him success as he embarks on his college career at the University of South Carolina.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Chris Campbell.
