A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND CONGRATULATE MICHAEL HICKS II, OF LEXINGTON COUNTY, ON BEING SELECTED TO RECEIVE THE 2008 THEODORE V. NANNEY SCHOLARSHIP, AND TO WISH HIM SUCCESS AS HE EMBARKS ON HIS COLLEGE CAREER AT MIDLANDS TECHNICAL COLLEGE.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives pause to honor Michael Hicks II, of Irmo, the son of Theresa and Michael Hicks, who has been awarded the 2008 Theodore V. Nanney Scholarship; and

Whereas, because his career at Dutch Fork High School has been marked with hard work, Michael Hicks also has qualified to receive the Hope Scholarship to attend Midlands Technical College and pursue a career in nursing; and

Whereas, in June 2006, he traveled with a service group from his church, Riverland Hills Baptist Church, to serve the lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans, so devastated by Hurricane Katrina, and since May 2007, he has been employed by Food Lion as a cashier to pay the expenses on his own automobile; and

Whereas, the Theodore "Ted" V. Nanney Scholarship of five hundred dollars was established in 2006 in furtherance of Representative Nathan Ballentine's commitment to return his legislative salary to the community and in honor of his wife's uncle who died in 2005. Mr. Nanney earned his commercial pilot's license and was employed by Eastern Airlines; and

Whereas, since Mr. Nanney was a graduate of A-B Technical College with specialty training in the automotive and welding fields, this scholarship is awarded annually to one high school student who plans to attend Midlands Technical College; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are pleased to have the opportunity to recognize Michael Hicks II, an outstanding student and citizen of South Carolina, who has brought great pride to his family, school, and community. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and congratulate Michael Hicks II, of Irmo, on being selected to receive the 2008 Theodore V. Nanney Scholarship, and wish him success as he embarks on his college career at Midlands Technical College.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Michael Hicks II.
