A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR HARRY R. RILEY, NATIVE OF CALHOUN COUNTY, ON THE HAPPY OCCASION OF HIS ONE HUNDREDTH BIRTHDAY, AND TO WISH HIM ALL THE BEST IN THE COMING YEARS.

Whereas, a St. Matthews native, Harry Riley was born to his proud parents, David and Rebecca Speaks Riley, on April 14, 1907; and

Whereas, the second oldest of seven children, Mr. Riley enjoyed a happy childhood and a close relationship with his siblings, Daisy R. Stack, Joseph Riley, Clarence Riley, Marian R. Tyler, James W. Riley, and Jessie R. Echols; and

Whereas, Mr. Riley attended St. Matthews public schools through the tenth grade, when the school year lasted only six months because of sharecropping. He resumed his education in Columbia, graduating from Allen University as a high school student in 1928; and

Whereas, a dedicated employee of the V.A. Hospital, Mr. Riley worked in the Dietetic Department for thirty-one years before retiring in 1970; and

Whereas, Mr. Riley shared a loving, fifty-three year marriage with his wife, Viola Wilson. Their marriage was blessed by four adoring children, Virginia Ann, Harriett Mable, Richard Wendell, and Evangeline Deloris; and

Whereas, a widower for a number of years, Mr. Riley was remarried at the age of 84 to his lovely bride, Mattie Muffree. Together, they attend Pecan Grove Seventh Day Adventist Church in Orangeburg, where they are known as the oldest members and the oldest married couple; and

Whereas, steadfast in his faith, Mr. Riley accepted Christ as his personal Savior at the early age of fourteen and was a dedicated member of Union Baptist Church and Ephesus Seventh Day Adventist Church before joining his current church; and

Whereas, inspiring fellow Christians with his love and commitment to his church community, he has held numerous positions and affiliations within the church, including Sunday School and Sabbath School teacher, Superintendent of Sabbath School, and Vacation Bible School Director, among others; and

Whereas, a true man of God, Mr. Riley continues to study the Bible on a daily basis and credits his longevity to a strict vegetarian diet and a healthy lifestyle; and

Whereas, it is with great pride that the members of the South Carolina Senate pause in their deliberations to honor Mr. Riley for his outstanding contributions to his faith, family, and community. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and honor Harry R. Riley of Calhoun County on the happy occasion of his one hundredth birthday, and wish him all the best in the coming years.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Harry R. Riley.
