VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO HONOR AND CONGRATULATE THE STUDENTS, PARENTS, FACULTY, STAFF, AND ADMINISTRATION OF DOBY'S MILL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN KERSHAW COUNTY ON RECEIVING THE PRESTIGIOUS 2007 PALMETTO'S FINEST AWARD AND FOR STRIVING TO REACH AND MAXIMIZE THE FULL MEASURE OF THEIR TALENTS AND ABILITIES.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly were pleased to learn that Doby's Mill Elementary School won the coveted 2007 Palmetto's Finest Award; and
Whereas, the South Carolina Association of School Administrators and Carolina First Corporation annually recognize two elementary schools, a middle school, and a high school that have educators, students, parents, and supporters who are responsible for "innovative, effective educational programs"; and
Whereas, judges who recommend Palmetto's Finest winners take into account objective factors such as test scores and college admission offers but also consider other, sometimes less recognizable factors such as volunteerism; and
Whereas, each applicant school first completes a seventeen page written statement detailing virtually every aspect of the school's operation, focusing on the question: "What impact is this school making on the lives of students and the community, and is it deserving of the award?"; and
Whereas, applicants are then visited by members of the South Carolina Association of School Administrators' Palmetto's Finest Awards Committee; and
Whereas, after the sixteen finalists are selected, each school undergoes a second visit from a different team of committee members, after which a selection meeting is held to determine the four winners; and
Whereas, a finalist for the prestigious award for the 2005-2006 school year, Doby's Mill Elementary School captured the 2007 honor at the awards ceremony held in the Koger Center in Columbia; and
Whereas, the school's Lego Robotic Team outscored one hundred and seventy-four other South Carolina schools in the FIRST Lego League competition and will represent the United States in the Open European Championship in Norway; and
Whereas, the school certainly recognizes the importance of a quality education and the ability of its students to learn. Such dedication is readily evident, as the administration, faculty, and surrounding community are more than willing to give of their time, going above and beyond traditional classroom instruction to achieve their goals; and
Whereas, education at Doby's Mill Elementary School expands the horizons of its students in an innovative and effective manner, serving as a shining example for schools throughout the State. The members of the General Assembly are proud to honor their effort and success. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, honor and congratulate the students, parents, faculty, staff, and administration of Doby's Mill Elementary School on receiving the prestigious 2007 Palmetto's Finest Award and for striving to reach and maximize the full measure of their talents and abilities.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Principal W. Glenn Huggins of Doby's Mill Elementary School.
