A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO EXTEND THE WARMEST CONGRATULATIONS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA SENATE TO MR. NICHOLAS SMITH ON THE CELEBRATION OF HIS FOURTEENTH AND FINAL SEASON OF REMARKABLE AND DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AS MUSIC DIRECTOR AND CONDUCTOR OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA, TO COMMEND HIM AND EXPRESS DEEP APPRECIATION TO HIM FOR HIS DEDICATION TO EXCELLENCE IN MUSICIANSHIP AND HIS SUPPORT OF THE PERFORMING ARTS, AND TO WISH HIM GOOD LUCK AND GODSPEED IN ALL HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate have learned that Mr. Nicholas Smith will be celebrating his fourteenth and final season as the esteemed Music Director and Conductor of the South Carolina Philharmonic; and

Whereas, as a graduate of the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester, England, Nicholas Smith began a stellar career that has included such notable appointments as the Principal Conductor with the Kuopio Opera of Finland and the Northern Chamber Orchestra of the England and which provided the path for the City of Columbia and all of South Carolina to be the beneficiaries of his exceptional talent at the South Carolina Philharmonic, the Palmetto Opera, the South Carolina Opera; and

Whereas, Mr. Smith also has found time to share his expertise and many talents with scores of other philharmonic endeavors such as the BBC Studio Strings of the UK, the Seville Philharmonic of Spain, the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra of the UK, the Finnish National Ballet, and so many others and in so doing, sharing his acclaim with South Carolina; and

Whereas, his vision, energy, and commitment have made his tenure with the South Carolina Philharmonic a golden period for the orchestra, marked by increased audiences, more concerts, and cooperation with other organizations in the State; and

Whereas, Maestro Smith will be fondly and long remembered for a flawless tenure marked by an unbroken string of performances which continue to inspire the very best from every musician and which engage, entertain, and enrich the audience on every level. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, offer their warmest congratulations to Mr. Nicholas Smith on the celebration of his fourteenth and final season of remarkable and distinguished service as the Music Director and Conductor of the South Carolina Philharmonic Orchestra and commend him and express deep appreciation to him for his dedication to excellence in musicianship and support of the performing arts and to wish him good luck and god speed in all his future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that this resolution be presented to Maestro Smith on April 21, 2007, at his concluding performance.
