A SENATE RESOLUTION

THANKING OLLIE S. MCALISTER OF JASPER COUNTY FOR HER LONG AND SELFLESS RECORD OF SERVICE TO THE YOUTH OF JASPER COUNTY AND RECOGNIZING HER PLACE AS A SPECIAL CITIZEN OF THAT COUNTY AND THIS STATE.

Whereas, Ollie S. McAlister was born in Jasper County, South Carolina, the daughter of the late Reverend J.C. Simmons and Hattie Norton Simmons; and

Whereas, her home county has been the focus of her contributions to the youth, her community, and her church; and

Whereas, receiving her B.A. degree from Morris College in Sumter and the M.Ed. degree from North Carolina Central University, she taught in the Jasper County Schools for seventeen years; and

Whereas, she dedicated the next sixteen years of her life to the Beaufort-Jasper EOC, Inc. Neighborhood Youth Corps, serving as counselor and director; and

Whereas, she served as Director of the Jasper County Department of Social Services until 1992; and

Whereas, during that long career of service to the youth and her community, she also was the loving wife of the late Abner R. McAlister and mother to Patricia McAlister Bynum; and

Whereas, the grandmother of two now directs the youth programs at St. Matthews Baptist Church in Ridgeland, continuing in her proud tradition of helping the young people of her community; and

Whereas, in her spare time she is active as a poet, a venison chef, and a fruitcake baker, at which all pursuits she excels. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, thank Ollie S. McAlister of Jasper County for her long and selfless record of service to the youth of Jasper County and recognize her place as a special citizen of that county and this State.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Ollie S. McAlister.
