VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO RECOGNIZE JOSHUA TIMOTHY STEPP AND JUSTIN SPENCER STEPP FOR THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS TO HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE FOOTBALL IN SOUTH CAROLINA, AND TO CONGRATULATE THEM FOR BEING NAMED TO THE PELION HIGH SCHOOL HALL OF FAME.
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina are pleased to learn that Joshua Timothy Stepp and Justin Spencer Stepp will be inducted into the Pelion High School Hall of Fame on February 3, 2012; and
Whereas, twin sons of Sherell and Tim Stepp, Josh and Justin were born on July 5, 1983, and began their football careers together at Pelion High School; and
Whereas, when critics said the young athletes were too small and not fast enough to compete in football, they simply relied on the Bible passage they had learned as children, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me"; and
Whereas, the twins were both All-State selections for three of their four high-school years and were the first two players from Pelion High School to play in the Shrine Bowl game; when they graduated from high school, they were honored by the school retiring their jerseys; and
Whereas, after they graduated from Pelion High in 2002, the brothers both signed to play football for Furman University, but after the first year, Josh transferred to Newberry College; and
Whereas, Justin continued at Furman where he earned a degree in health and exercise science. He was a receiver/punt return specialist and a wide receiver, ranked fourth in all-time receiving for the Paladins, and was twice named to the first team in the Southern Conference; and
Whereas, at Newberry Josh earned a degree in health and physical education. As a Newberry Indian quarterback, Josh broke all previous passing records for Newberry College and was named to the All-American team; and
Whereas, Josh has been the head football coach for the Dreher High School Blue Devils since 2010 where he also teaches health and physical education, and he earned a master's degree in secondary curriculum from Phoenix University; and
Whereas, Justin coached wide receivers at North Greenville University before becoming a video graduate-assistant coach for the offense at Clemson where he received a master's degree in youth counseling; and
Whereas, while Josh remains the coach at Dreher High School, Justin looks forward to beginning as the running-back coach for Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina; and
Whereas, established in 2003, the Pelion High School Hall of Fame recognizes outstanding athletes, teachers, administrators, coaches, and those who have devoted time and services to the school; and
Whereas, with the arrival of 2012, the first year the Stepp brothers have been eligible for induction, Josh and Justin were obvious nominees because they hold every passing and receiving record for Pelion football and led Pelion to the school's first undefeated regular season and first regional championship; and
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly are grateful for the role model that Josh and Justin Stepp have set for youth in the Palmetto State and look to hear of their ongoing success and future accomplishments. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize Joshua Timothy Stepp and Justin Spencer Stepp for their contributions to high school and college football in South Carolina, and congratulate them for being named to the Pelion High School Hall of Fame.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Joshua Timothy Stepp and Justin Spencer Stepp.
