A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE ANDERSON UNIVERSITY ATHLETES AND ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT FOR OUTSTANDING ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE, AND TO CONGRATULATE THEM FOR CAPTURING SECOND PLACE IN THE ECHOLS ATHLETIC EXCELLENCE AWARD OF THE SOUTH ATLANTIC CONFERENCE.

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina are pleased to learn that Anderson University has earned second place in the Echols Athletic Excellence Award, named after former South Atlantic Conference (SAC) Commissioner Doug Echols, to be presented at the conference's Hall of Fame banquet on June 7, 2012; and

Whereas, in just its second year as a member of the SAC, Anderson University has claimed second place in the standings for the league's Echols Athletic Excellence Award; and

Whereas, the award is presented annually to the member athletic department that earns the highest point total based on cumulative final standings in each of the conference's sports; and

Whereas, the tally includes the scores from the end of the regular season for the sports of men's and women's soccer, volleyball, football, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's tennis, baseball, and softball, while SAC championship results are counted for men's and women's cross country and men's and women's golf; and

Whereas, in third place heading into the spring season, Anderson University used strong performances from both their men's and women's tennis programs and a third-place finish in softball to garner the second-place honors with a total of 89.5 points; and

Whereas, the Trojans captured first place in the conference in men's soccer, men's basketball, and women's cross country, while sharing the top spot in women's tennis. Men's cross country took second at the league championships, while the women's soccer team claimed a tie for third in the fall. The men's tennis squad took the second spot, and the men's and women's golf teams finished fourth and seventh, respectively; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives appreciate the recognition that the Anderson University athletic program has brought to the school and to the State through its commitment to a high standard of excellence. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and honor the Anderson University athletes and athletic department for outstanding athletic performance, and congratulate them for capturing second place in the Echols Athletic Excellence Award of the South Atlantic Conference.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to Anderson University President Dr. Evans P. Whitaker.
