VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE MYRTLE BEACH HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL TEAM, COACHES, AND SCHOOL OFFICIALS FOR AN OUTSTANDING SEASON AND TO CONGRATULATE THEM FOR WINNING THE 2013 CLASS AAA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE.
Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is pleased to learn that the members of the Myrtle Beach High School football team of Horry County took top honors at the state competition held at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia on December 7, 2013; and
Whereas, the early games of the season did not leave the Myrtle Beach Seahawks with a promising bid for the state championship, but by the end of the season, the Seahawks posted an 11-4 record, with eight consecutive wins; and
Whereas, delighted to watch their team rush and pound the path to victory, the Myrtle Beach fans cheered as the Seahawks' talons snatched the trophy from the claws of the Daniel High School Lions in a nail-biting, breath-stopping 24-21 finish; and
Whereas, the Lions entered the final game with a 40.2-point game average for the season, but the Myrtle Beach defense powered over the Daniel offense, holding the Lions to half of their season average; and
Whereas, Myrtle Beach took the early lead 7-0 in the first quarter, but the Lions answered in the second quarter and left the field tied at the half; and
Whereas, in the third and fourth quarters, the Lions and the Seahawks countered touchdowns, with sophomore quarterback Drayton Arnold leading the Seahawks in a memorable final drive in one of his best games of the season; and
Whereas, Daniel tied the score with a 5-yard touchdown run with only four minutes left in the game, but in the final minutes of play, Seahawk kicker Sean Huggins gave the Lions a parting shot when he lofted a 22-yard field goal to seal the school's seventh state championship title; and
Whereas, in a sport that demands strength, expertise, and determination, Head Coach Mickey Wilson and his skilled coaching staff capitalized on their own athletic ability and training to build a championship team and teach these athletes lessons that will prove invaluable through life both on and off the gridiron; and
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives appreciate the pride and recognition that the Myrtle Beach High School football players have brought to their school and their community and look to hear of their continued accomplishments in the days ahead. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor the Myrtle Beach High School football team, coaches, and school officials for an outstanding season and congratulate them for winning the 2013 Class AAA State Championship title.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Principal John Washburn and Coach Mickey Wilson.
