VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR FORMER SOUTH CAROLINA GOVERNOR DAVID BEASLEY FOR HIS WORLD FOOD PROGRAMME AND TO WELCOME HIM TO SOUTH CAROLINA.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are pleased to recognize former South Carolina Governor David Beasley, executive director of the World Food Programme; and
Whereas, the World Food Programme works in over eighty countries to bring life-saving food to people displaced by conflict and made destitute by disasters, and help individuals and communities find life-changing solutions to the challenges they face in building better futures; and
Whereas, the World Food Programme works to enhance nutrition in women and children, support small farmers in improving productivity and reducing losses, help countries and communities prepare for and cope with climate-related shocks, and develop school feeding programs; and
Whereas, the World Food Programme received the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize for its efforts to combat hunger, for its contributions to bettering conditions for peace in conflict-affected areas, and for acting as a driving force in efforts to prevent the use of hunger as a weapon of war and conflict; and
Whereas, as Russian military strikes continue to pummel Ukraine, the World Food Programme, led by Governor Beasley's efforts, is working to assist the nearly forty million Ukrainians who remain in the country. Currently, the World Food Programme has a couple of hundred staff members on the ground in Ukraine trying to get provisions to the people who have been displaced and are under the impending threat of extreme cold and hunger; and
Whereas, Governor Beasley will be visiting the State of South Carolina on March 29, 2022 to discuss the hardships facing the people of Ukraine and the work currently being done by the World Food Programme to assist Ukrainians affected by this humanitarian disaster; and
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate greatly appreciate the dedication and commitment that Governor Beasley has shown in serving the people and the State of South Carolina. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, recognize and honor former South Carolina Governor David Beasley for his World Food Programme and to welcome him to South Carolina.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Governor David Beasley.
