A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT COUNCILS OF SOUTH CAROLINA AND TO COMMEND THEM FOR FORTY-FIVE YEARS OF CIVIC ENGAGEMENT AT WORK IN PUBLIC EDUCATION.

Whereas, School Improvement Councils were mandated by the South Carolina General Assembly through the Education Finance Act of 1977 to provide a direct voice in the climate and progress of local public schools; and

Whereas, over twelve thousand parents, community members, educators, and students currently serve on School Improvement Councils in our State's more than eleven hundred public schools; and

Whereas, these School Improvement Council members are committed to the preparation of all South Carolina schoolchildren with the world class skills necessary for successful futures; and

Whereas, School Improvement Councils endorse meaningful family and community engagement as a source of value and strength for all schools; and

Whereas, our State's School Improvement Councils have a vital role in supporting effective public schools and in upholding their accountability to the citizens of all ages and locales whom they serve; and

Whereas, the South Carolina School Improvement Council at the University of South Carolina College of Education is dedicated to actively promoting and supporting the ongoing work and impact of our State's local School Improvement Councils and their members; and

Whereas, the South Carolina Senate commends and esteems the inspiration, passion, and vision of parents, community leaders, educators, and students who devote hundreds of thousands of volunteer hours to their School Improvement Councils annually in service to South Carolina's public schools by working toward these goals. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, recognize and honor the School Improvement Councils of South Carolina and commend them for forty-five years of civic engagement at work in public education.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the South Carolina School Improvement Council Board of Trustees and Executive Director.
