A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA SENATE UPON THE PASSING OF REVEREND DOCTOR STEPHEN SAMUEL LOMAX, PASTOR OF NEW LIFE IN CHRIST MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH OF GREENVILLE COUNTY, AND TO EXTEND THEIR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS LARGE AND LOVING FAMILY, HIS DEVOTED CONGREGATION, AND HIS MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate were saddened to learn of the death of Reverend Doctor Stephen Samuel Lomax at the age of sixty-nine on April 22, 2022; and

Whereas, born in Greenville into the loving family of the late Luther Lomax and Ola Mae Henderson Lomax, he was the youngest of their nine children; and

Whereas, Dr. Lomax played in soul bands around the country, which he left behind when he came to faith in Jesus Christ in 1976 at the Old Pilgrim Baptist Church, trading soul music for soul winning; and

Whereas, he earned associate's, bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees from North Greenville College, the University of South Carolina, and Erskine College and Seminary; and

Whereas, for thirty-five years, Dr. Lomax pastored many churches in South Carolina, faithfully serving his God and the congregations in his care. In 2005, he organized the New Life in Christ Missionary Baptist Church in Fountain Inn and became its senior pastor, a position from which he ministered to his congregation and to the community until his passing; and

Whereas, some of Dr. Lomax's scholarly work includes books for the instruction of his congregation and the greater Christian community: Did the Devil Make Me Do It?; What You Don't Know Can Not Only Hurt You, But Destroy You; It's All in Your Mind; and Just Wait Till Your Daddy Gets Home; and

Whereas, together with his beloved wife, Frances S. Lomax, he reared four fine children: Reverend Jerrell Lomax, Kenya Lomax Sims, Africa Lomax McComb, and Stephanie Lomax Roux. They blessed him with the affection of eleven loving grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are grateful for the life and legacy of Stephen Lomax and for the example of humility and service he set for all who knew him. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the passing of Stephen Samuel Lomax, Pastor of New Life in Christ Missionary Baptist Church of Greenville County, and extend their deepest sympathy to his large and loving family, his devoted congregation, and his many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Pastor Stephen S. Lomax.
