A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR DR. WILLIE L. TODD, JR., ON THE OCCASION OF HIS INVESTITURE AS THE NINTH PRESIDENT OF DENMARK TECHNICAL COLLEGE AND TO WISH HIM MUCH SUCCESS AS HE CONTINUES TO LEAD THE COLLEGE IN THE DAYS AHEAD.

Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is pleased to learn that Dr. Willie L. Todd, Jr., will be invested as the ninth president of Denmark Technical College on Friday, April 30, 2021; and

Whereas, after a nationwide search, the Denmark Technical College Area Commission members voted unanimously to name Dr. Todd as the college's new leader. He assumed the helm of the institution on January 13, 2020; and

Whereas, Dr. Todd's leadership in academic and student affairs, coupled with his expertise in institutional development and curriculum design at various historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) over the last twenty-four years, underscores his ability to continue the strong momentum Denmark Tech has built. Dr. Todd has proved he holds contemporary "best practice" ideals, along with traditional workforce ethics that are allowing him to move Denmark Tech into a more prominent position as a technical college. The future looks bright as the college continues to support and encourage the momentum it has gained; and

Whereas, Dr. Todd is fostering the college's vision by building capacity through outlining a spirit of collaboration and focusing on shared governance. These tools have propelled him in the past and will be cornerstones as he helms Denmark Technical College to greater success; and

Whereas, when he took up his duties at Denmark Tech in 2020, Dr. Todd already had compiled an extensive record in higher education. He had served as provost and vice president for academic affairs at Wiley College (Marshall, Texas), vice provost and associate vice provost at Norfolk State University (Norfolk, Virginia), and adjunct instructor at Georgia State University at Perimeter College (Decatur, Georgia). During his tenure at Clark Atlanta University (Atlanta, Georgia), he served as executive director of student affairs, director of leadership and student development, undergraduate program coordinator, and faculty member; and

Whereas, his influence in higher education is mirrored by his work in several professional and civic organizations. He is a named fellow of the Zeta cohort of the Higher Education Leadership Foundation. Also, he was a regional director for the Alpha Kappa Mu National Honor Society. Dr. Todd is a nationally recognized playwright who has served as editor of both the National Association of Dramatic and Speech Arts Encore Journal and the Charles Chestnut Society's newsletter. Moreover, in 2018 Dr. Todd co-founded the HBCU Learning Ecosystem, a collaboration of HBCUs with the primary purpose of addressing institutional effectiveness; and

Whereas, Dr. Todd earned a bachelor's degree in English and a master's degree in English education from Albany State University in Georgia. He also holds a master's degree in higher education administration from Regent University and a doctorate in English from Georgia State University; and

Whereas, the House of Representatives takes great pleasure in saluting Dr. Todd at the celebration of his investiture as Denmark Technical College's ninth president, and the members extend best wishes to Dr. Todd, his family, and the college at this blessed time of rejoicing. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor Dr. Willie L. Todd, Jr., on the occasion of his investiture as the ninth president of Denmark Technical College and wish him much success as he continues to lead the college in the days ahead.
