A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE RIVER BLUFF HIGH SCHOOL WE THE PEOPLE TEAM, THE TEAM SUPERVISORS, AND SCHOOL OFFICIALS AND TO CONGRATULATE THEM FOR A WINNING PERFORMANCE AT THE WE THE PEOPLE STATE LEVEL COMPETITION.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly were pleased to learn that the members of the River Bluff High School We the People team in Lexington County emerged from the state competition with the highest scores of all high school teams present on December 3, 2020; and

Whereas, sponsored by the South Carolina Bar Association's Law Related Education Division, the We the People state competition included four teams from the Palmetto State and three teams from North Carolina; and

Whereas, the River Bluff team consists of all seniors who are enrolled in Advanced Placement (AP) United States Government and Politics at River Bluff, and they are coached by three members of the River Bluff High School faculty: Linsy Dooley, Keith Brayman, and Mike Burgess; and

Whereas, to prepare for the competition, students were placed in groups where they collaborated with their peers to create a four-minute prepared response to three questions that fell under categories ranging from philosophical foundations of American government to contemporary applications of the Constitution; and

Whereas, in a further test of their knowledge on their topic, the students prepared for a six-minute question-and-answer period with a panel of judges to be delivered on competition day; and

Whereas, in the six units which were judged for individual awards in the competition, River Bluff High School won all six Best Unit awards, the first time in the school's history in the We the People competition; and

Whereas, the River Bluff team members were Noah Adams, Ashley Berry, Samuel Brandes, Jackson Burgess, Patton Byars, Megan Clancy, Elijah Crawford, Laci Ellis, Kellan Fenegan, Dianna Graham, Caroline Harris, Caliop Hershey, Macie Johnson, Carlos Lopez, Grace Murdock, Abria Nichols, Dakota Price, Tucker Privette, Kristin Rivera, Matthew Smith, Shaye Thoroughman, Samantha Timmerman, Kristen Ward, Alexander Wetherley, Sydney Wilson, and one of our own, Legislative Council Intern Hannah Smith; and

Whereas, grateful for the pride and recognition that the We the People team scholars of River Bluff High School have brought to their school and their community, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly look to hear of their continued accomplishments in the days ahead. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize and honor the River Bluff High School We the People team, the team supervisors, and school officials and congratulate them for a winning performance at the We the People state level competition.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Dr. Lucas Clamp, Principal of River Bluff High School, and to Linsy Dooley, Keith Brayman, and Mike Burgess.
