A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE THE HAMMOND SCHOOL BASEBALL TEAM FOR AN IMPRESSIVE SEASON AND TO CELEBRATE THE SKYHAWKS' CAPTURE OF THE 2021 SOUTH CAROLINA INDEPENDENT SCHOOL ASSOCIATION CLASS 3A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE.

Whereas, on Tuesday, May 11, 2021, a determined Hammond School baseball team claimed the 2021 South Carolina Independent School Association (SCISA) Class 3A State Championship title with an 8-2 victory, powering past Cardinal Newman to sweep the best-of-three championship series; and

Whereas, last season, the Skyhawks and the rest of spring sports teams across the country were cut short because of the COVID-19 pandemic. A year later, the Skyhawks are back on top of SCISA 3A; and

Whereas, Hammond lost two of its last four games before the playoffs but went 5-0 in the postseason to win the school's sixth championship. It is the second title under Head Coach Chris Braciszewski, who joined the Skyhawk staff in 2016 and was named head coach in 2018. Many of the seniors on this year's team were on Braciszewski's junior varsity team his first season; and

Whereas, after winning a thriller 9-8 in the opener on Monday, Hammond didn't take long to take control of the game. The Skyhawks scored four in the top of the first, two coming on Grant Dorsey's two-run single. Hammond added three more in the second on a Cardinal Newman error, to lead 7-0; and

Whereas, Cardinal Newman got within 7-2 in the third inning. But Hammond starter and LSU commit Tucker Toman settled down and took command on the mound. Toman, who walked in seven of his at-bats at the plate, pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits while striking out six; and

Whereas, proud of these fine student athletes, the South Carolina House of Representatives appreciates the recognition the Hammond School baseball players have brought to their school and community, and the members look to hear of many more victories for the school in coming seasons. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate the Hammond School baseball team for an impressive season and celebrate the Skyhawks' capture of the 2021 South Carolina Independent School Association Class 3A State Championship title.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Head of School Christopher Angel and Head Coach Chris Braciszewski of Hammond School.
