TO RECOGNIZE FEBRUARY 28, 2022, THE DAY CONNECTING BLACK HISTORY AND WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTHS, AS "BLACK WOMEN'S DAY" IN THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA, AND TO HONOR BLACK WOMEN BY ACKNOWLEDGING AND CELEBRATING THE BRILLIANCE, BEAUTY, AND BOLDNESS OF THESE WOMEN IN OUR COMMUNITIES.
Whereas, Black women have joined forces with women all over the world, including Native Americans, Asians, Hispanics, Caucasians, Europeans, and Africans, to empower all women; and
Whereas, Black women have shaped America's history; and
Whereas, Black women have been the foundation of the Black community and the Black church; and
Whereas, Black women have faced many obstacles and consistently have been fully present in the world, presenting themselves with beauty, authenticity, and inspiration; and
Whereas, Black women have historically been champions for all people and races; and
Whereas, Black women seek out oppression anywhere it exists and are champions for Civil Rights and for a world that works for all people; and
Whereas, the cherished memory of "mama" and the ancestors who taught Black women to be strong and resourceful and to do good for the greater good is a cause for celebrating Black women; and
Whereas, Black women are experts at making lemonade out of life's lemons; and
Whereas, Black women, such as Shirley Chisolm, Lucy French, Harriet Tubman, Kamala Harris, Georgia Powers, Mad Street Kidd, and the unknown black women who have given their all, have excelled in all areas, from art, government, math, and science to business, farming, teaching, and family; and
Whereas, Black women are boldly taking the Palmetto State where it has not gone before; and
Whereas, the last day of February connects the celebration of Black History and Women's History months and symbolically represents the combination of being black and woman. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize February 28, 2022, the day connecting Black History and Women's History months, as "Black Women's Day" in the State of South Carolina, and honor Black women by acknowledging and celebrating the brilliance, beauty, and boldness of these women in our communities.
